About Me

My name is Zach Van Handel, and I am currently studying Computer Science at Colorado State University in Fort Collins. Ever since I was young, I have loved solving puzzles and figuring out the best way to deal with problems. This led me to discover the concept of software development, and once I began learning how to code, I was hooked. Software is my passion and I hope that one day I will be able to utilize it in order to improve the lives of people in my own community and maybe even the entire world. Currently, I am just trying to learn as much as I can about different technologies used in the software industry and how they work together.

Software Engineering InternMay 2018 - August 2018

I rejoined Charter Communications during the summer of 2018 after a great experience during the previous summer. This time, I worked at their new office in Greenwood Village, CO. I worked on a team of 8-12 developers and gained a deeper understanding of Agile through daily stand up meetings and sprint planning. During my time there, I updated dozens of integration and unit tests for my team. The tests were written in Java and/or Groovy using the TestNG and Serenity frameworks. I also learned a great deal about working to develop software as a team through the use of GitHub, Maven, IntelliJ IDEA, TeamCity, and Slack. In addition, I had the privilege of working with a team of nine other interns from various disciplines to create a presentation on how Charter could use its newest technologies to change the Telecommunications industry. My experience this summer was great as it allowed me improve my technical skills and at the same time improve my ability to communicate well and successfully work with others under various circumstances.

Software Engineering InternJune 2017 - August 2017

Over the summer of 2017, I had the amazing opportunity to work as an intern at Charter Communications in Broomfield, CO. Over the course of my internship, I collaborated with a number of developers in an Agile work environment. The first project I worked on was a stand-alone tool written in Java that compared hundreds of TV providers and their associated products between a local database and a national list using JDBC/JSON, SQL, and a REST client. Later, I updated the logging in a major component of software from Apache log4j to Apache log4j2 & SLF4J. The codebase I updated contained over two hundred Java files and the changes I made were included in the next major release of the company’s product.

Colorado State University

Web Developer, University Honors ProgramJanuary 2018 - Present

In January of 2018, I began working for the Honors Office at Colorado State University. My responsibilities include maintaining and updating the Honors website through the use of MVC architecture along with C#, HTML, and ASP.NET. In addition to the website, I also keep up the databases for the Honors Office and use SQL Server and SSIS to perform database operations when necessary. Lastly, I am in charge of the honors tech support email and I handle any technical issues that might arise relating to the website, the office, or nearby faculty offices and classrooms.

(Building this Website!)

Around the beginning of 2018, I decided I wanted to try and create a personal website. In order to get my website up and running, I had to teach myself HTML, CSS, and JavaScript so that I could adjust the free template I found at StyleShout to fit my needs. Over the span of about two months, I learned enough that I was able to finally deploy my website, which is currently being hosted on GitHub Pages! Working on my website has taught me a lot about web development and motivated me to learn as much as I can about software development in general.

Here is an overview of some of the most common technologies that I have used. Listing every single language or tool I have ever used would not be practical, so I decided to list the technologies that I am most comfortable with and most interested in continuing to work with in the future.
